Things to do in Haight-Ashbury
Haight-Ashbury is famous for being the birthplace of the hippie movement. The neighborhood was also a mecca for rock music, and many bands got their start here! It’s no surprise that there are so many great things to do in this neighborhood. Here are just a few of our favorites:
Visit Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park has plenty of green space, making it an ideal place to take your dog for a walk or enjoy some outdoor recreation. If you are looking for something more cultural, there are museums like the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum nearby as well as art installations on display at Strybing Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.
Eat at one of the many restaurants in Haight-Ashbury
Whether you are looking for vegan ice cream, donuts with unique flavors or a casual lunch, there are plenty of great restaurants in Haight-Ashbury. Our favorites include Pica Pica Maize Kitchen for Venezuelan cuisine and The Front Porch which serves up Cajun fare with live music every night!
Listen to some music at Amoeba Music
Amoeba Music is one of the best independent record stores in the country and a great place to find rare vinyl records. Just be sure to bring your wallet as you might leave with more than just music!
View one of Haight-Ashbury’s murals
Haight-Ashbury is known for its vibrant street art, like the famous “Giant Monkeys” mural on Cole Street. You can grab a map of the murals at Amoeba Music or your hotel and spend an afternoon exploring the neighborhood’s public artworks!
Walk through Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is one of our favorite things to do in San Francisco, no matter what time of year you visit. From its museums to biking trails, you can easily spend an entire day here.
Take a tour of The Grateful Dead House
The Grateful Dead moved to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood in 1965 and set up their recording studio at Seventh and Ashbury Streets. This building has since become known as “The Grateful Dead House” because it was where many members of the band lived and hosted famous guests like Janis Joplin.
Take a tour of Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s most popular attractions, but many visitors are unaware that this former prison offers tours! You can explore the creepy cell blocks where prisoners were held or walk along sweeping views from its scenic point on top of the island. This small area has lots to offer so be sure to plan your visit in advance before coming here with friends or family!
