Crushed stone is typically created by mining a suitable rock deposit and breaking the removed rock down to small sizes through the use of crushing machines. Crushed stone, also known as angular rock is a type of aggregate used in many constructions. It is different from gravel which has a rounded shape and is produced by natural processes of weathering and erosion.
Angular rocks are high-volume and low-value commodities. Operations serving local and regional markets are being done by the industry. The costs of labour, energy, equipment, and water are the main factors for the price of this commodity. Aside from that, companies are still required to comply with the local environmental and safety regulations. The cost of various economic factors varies on the location where the resources are taken. Crushed stone has one of the lowest averages in terms of weight value out of all the mineral commodities.
Crushed stone is simply how its name implies. It is produced through crushing of rocks by crushing machines. Landscaping and aggregate for construction are the main uses of crushed stone. Crushed stone should not be confused with gravel as both construction aggregates are entire different.
Crushed stones are very cheap compared to other construction aggregates. It is a valuable resource and a major revenue-producing industry in the world. Transportation can be the only determining factor to the increase of prices which is why crushed stones are more often produced locally. Crushed stones are widely used in construction so its industry also plays a major role i the economic growth of the state.
Limestone, sand, dolomite, iron, steel and expanded clay are some of the many base material rocks used in the production of crushed stones. The slag from these materials is typically used to create the stone.
Because crushed stone is not produced through natural ways, it can be created in different forms and sizes. The best size of crushed stones for construction purposes would depend on the project. Billions of metric tons of crushed stone are used yearly in various ways.
- It is used in paving blocks and concrete for driveways, patios, sidewalks, homes, office buildings and paved roads. It typically set as the base or sub-base material in the process of cement manufacture. It is mixed with a binder to make asphalt and tarmac, which are also used for driveway extenders and fillers. There are various techniques used by construction workers in creating a strong road through the use of crushed stone.
- It is also used as a flux in blast furnaces to create liquid slag which becomes a stone material when cooled. Once crushed, the stone material can be used as a construction aggregate.
- It is sometimes utilized with a binding material in walls for railroad and shoreline construction. The crushed stone is referred to as rip rap or shot rock in shoreline protection. It is used in all manner of shoreline structures to protect against erosion from ice and water.
- It is also used in other erosion control efforts. Placed on the ground in landscapes around trees, drains and as tracking pads on construction sites.
- Tracking pads are temporary roadways used to prevent sediment from construction getting on public paved roads or landscaping.
- It is used for septic systems and self-contained sewage treatment systems. It is used to treat other harmful substances like coal dust or sulphur oxide in acid water and mines.
- It is also used in the manufacture of agricultural lime, which is the main ingredient for the treatment of soil acidity.
- It is used as grit and mineral food for feeding poultry. This mineral food is necessary for proper digestion in all kinds of poultry.
