History
This institution was founded in 1919 by Henry E. Huntington and his wife, Arabella D. Huntington. The Huntingtons were interested in creating a place where scholars could come for research and study. They also wanted to create a cultural center where the public could enjoy art and nature.
The library opened its doors to the public in 1922, followed by the art museum in 1924 and the botanical gardens in 1928.
