Snail Trail
Snail trail is one of the most popular trails in Pacific Highlands Ranch, CA. The trailhead is located just south of the intersection of Carmel Valley and Highland Valley roads.
The trail is a loop that winds its way through the hills for about two miles. It’s an easy hike, with only a few moderate hills, and is suitable for hikers of all ages. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a vigorous hike, the snail trail has something to offer.

History
This popular trail got its name from the many snail shells that can be found along the trail. It’s believed that the snails were brought to the area by early settlers. The snail population has since declined, but you can still find a few shells if you look closely.
It was first developed as a horse trail in the early 1900s. The trail was used to transport goods between the two settlements that eventually became Pacific Highlands Ranch.
The current loop trail was created in the 1990s.

If you’re planning on hiking the snail trail, be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. There are no restrooms or other facilities along the way, so be prepared for primitive conditions.
Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. The trail can be muddy after rain, so boots are recommended.
The Trailhead
The snail trailhead is located just south of Carmel Valley Road and Highland Valley Road intersection, near mile marker 13 on Carmel Valley Road. There is a small parking lot at the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly on weekends. There is also a large dirt turnout just south of the trailhead that can accommodate several cars.
